Im Dezember 1915 wurde in einer St. Petersburger Ausstellung mit dem ikonoklastisch anmutenden Namen \u203aLetzte futuristische Ausstellung 0,10\u2039 ein in seiner Bildsprache buchst\u00e4blich ikonoklastisches Gem\u00e4lde Kasimir Malewitschs erstmals der \u00d6ffentlichkeit gezeigt: Das \u00bbSchwarze Quadrat auf wei\u00dfen Grund\u00ab. Diese radikale formale Abstraktion war mehr als nur ein Bruch mit der figurativen Malerei, sie markierte den Beginn einer neuen politischen \u00c4sthetik. Indem Malewitsch das Quadrat in der Schau bewusst im sogenannten Herrgottswinkel platzierte, jenem Ort in russisch-orthodoxen Haushalten, der traditionell einer religi\u00f6sen Ikone vorbehalten war, erhob er das abstrakte Bild, das genau genommen die \u00dcbermalung eines figurativen Gem\u00e4ldes zeigte, zu einer Art Heiligenbild des modernen Zeitalters. Die dekonstruktive Geste dieser Bildplatzierung in einem ansonsten in Petersburger H\u00e4ngung gestalteten Galerieraum, sollte verdeutlichen, dass die Kunst sich nicht l\u00e4nger nur auf narrative oder repr\u00e4sentative Inhalte beschr\u00e4nkte, sondern ein radikales Potenzial zur Transformation von Wahrnehmung und Gesellschaft in sich trug. In der Kunstgeschichte der darauffolgenden Jahrzehnte transzendierte Abstraktion zur politischen Aussage, da sie die Macht der Form \u00fcber die blo\u00dfe Darstellung setzte und damit die Frage aufwarf, wie Kunst und das Politische miteinander verwoben sind, ja, bisweilen miteinander konkurrieren.<\/span>

Das \u00bbSchwarze Quadrat\u00ab \u00fcberdauerte die politischen, gesellschaftlichen, medienhistorischen und k\u00fcnstlerischen Revolutionen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Doch die radikale Abstraktion st\u00f6\u00dft angesichts der komplexen gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit gleichfalls an ihre Grenzen. In der Ausstellung \u00bbSoft Targets\u00ab wird diese Radikalit\u00e4t der Abstraktion teilweise wieder r\u00fcckg\u00e4ngig gemacht, sogar auf die Spitze getrieben und das Kruzifix, wie in der Arbeit \u00bbBlack Square\u00ab (2015) von IRWIN, wieder in die Ecke gesetzt, und zwar in die Ecke des schwarzen Quadrates. Die Arbeiten des K\u00fcnstlerkollektivs IRWIN, von Jonas H\u00f6schl und Jody Korbach, die im Rahmen der Ausstellung \u00bbSoft Targets\u00ab in den R\u00e4umen der Galerie Petra Martinetz gezeigt werden, nutzen das politische Potenzial der Kunst als Medium der Auseinandersetzung mit aktuellen politischen und sozialen Problemen. Sie stellen Fragen sowie Argumente zu Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit und Gesellschaftskritik, zu Identit\u00e4t und Konsum zur Disposition.<\/span>

\u2028Bei der Kuration der Ausstellung durch die beteiligten K\u00fcnstler:innen spielte die Petersburger H\u00e4ngung, bei der die W\u00e4nde dicht mit Kunstwerken behangen werden, als \u00fcbergreifendes Ordnungsprinzip eine wichtige Rolle. Diese Pr\u00e4sentationsform, die urspr\u00fcnglich in den Salons des 18. Jahrhunderts verwendet wurde, hat im Kontext dieser Ausstellung eine eigene Aussagekraft: Sie symbolisiert die \u00dcberflutung durch politische Reize und die komplexe Struktur, in der Inhalte an Bedeutung gewinnen. Im fr\u00fchen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert hatte sich die Kontextualisierung von Bildern in assoziativen Rastern bereits als bildwissenschaftliche Methode etabliert, namentlich etwa auf den Bildtafeln des Mnemosyne-Bilderatlas des Kunst- und Kulturhistorikers Aby Warburg (1866\u20131929). Durch das Nebeneinander der Werke in der Ausstellung \u00bbSoft Targets\u00ab, in denen die K\u00fcnstler:innen jeweils in ihrer eigenen Bildsprache operieren, entsteht ein visuelles Bezugssystem, das Verbindungen zwischen Kapitalismus, Politik und kultureller Identit\u00e4t aufdeckt \u2013 wie es etwa in den Werken von Jody Korbach deutlich wird. Jonas H\u00f6schl besch\u00e4ftigt sich in einer seiner ausgestellten Arbeiten, der druckgrafischen Serie \u00bbEurope is Lost\u00ab (2018) mit menschlichen Schicksalen, politischen Machtk\u00e4mpfen und der medialen Darstellung dieser Ereignisse. F\u00fcr die k\u00fcnstlerische Arbeit des K\u00fcnstlerkollektivs IRWIN ist dar\u00fcber hinaus die Verwendung von bereits bestehendem Bildmaterial als visuelle Samples von zentraler Bedeutung \u2013 ein reproduzierendes Vorgehen, von dem etwa einhundert Jahre zuvor auch Aby Warburgs Bilderatlas profitierte.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gemeinsam zeigen diese drei k\u00fcnstlerischen Positionen, wie vielf\u00e4ltig und vielschichtig Kunst auf politische und gesellschaftliche Themen reagieren kann. In dieser Form l\u00e4dt die Ausstellung \u00bbSoft Targets\u00ab dazu ein, die Kraft und Bedeutung von Bildern im politischen Diskurs zu hinterfragen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Painting \u2018Black Square on a White Background\u2019 by Kasimir Malevich was seen by the public for the first time in December 1915 at an exhibition with the seemingly iconoclastic name \u2018Last Futurist Exhibition 0.10\u2019 in St. Petersburg. This radically formal abstraction represented more than just a break from figurative painting; it marked the beginning of a new political aesthetic. By deliberately exhibiting his square in the so-called \u2018icon corner\u2019, a space in Russian Orthodox households traditionally reserved for displaying religious icons, Malevich elevated his abstract image, which, strictly speaking, painting over a figurative work, to a kind of sacred image of the modern age. The placement of his square in a gallery space that otherwise followed the Petersburg style of hanging was a deconstructive gesture intended to make it clear that art was no longer limited to narrative or representative content, but rather carried with it a radical potential for transforming perception and society. Over the course of the following decades art history recorded how abstraction transcended political statement by placing the power of form above mere representation, in doing so it raised the question of how art and the political are intertwined, and how sometimes in competition with one another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018Black Square\u2019 has outlasted the political, social, media-historical and artistic revolutions of the 20th century, and yet in the face of the complex social challenges of our time, radical abstraction seems to have reached its own limits. For the exhibition at Gallery Petra Martinetz Jonas H\u00f6schl and Jody Korbach present works by the artists collective IRWIN that utilise the political potential of art as a medium to deal with current political and social problems. They raise questions and put forward arguments on the subjects of belonging and social criticism, as well as identity and consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Petersburg style of hanging, in which the walls are densely covered with artworks, plays an important role as an overarching organising principle in the curation of the exhibition by the participating artists. Originally used in 18th-century salons, this form of presentation takes on a significance of its own in the context of this exhibition: it symbolises the flood of political stimuli and the complex structures in which content acquires meaning. The contextualisation of images in associative grids had already been established as a method in visual studies during the early twentieth century, notably by the art and cultural historian Aby Warburg (1866\u20131929) in the panels of the Mnemosyne Atlas. By presenting the works, in which the artists each operate in their own visual language, side by side in the exhibition \u2018Soft Targets\u2019, a visual system of reference is created that reveals connections between capitalism, politics and cultural identity \u2013 as can be seen, for example, in the works of Jody Korbach. Jonas H\u00f6schl deals with human destinies, political power struggles and the media representation of these events in his series of prints entitled \u2018Europe is Lost\u2019 (2018), just one of his works in the exhibition. Central to the artistic work of the IRWIN collective is the use of existing image material as visual samples \u2013 a reproductive approach that Aby Warburg’s image atlas also benefited from about a hundred years ago.\u00a0<\/span>

Together, these three artistic positions demonstrate how art can react to political and social issues in a diverse and multifaceted manner. In this way, the exhibition \u2018Soft Targets\u2019 invites its viewers to question the power and significance of images in political discourse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
